Sunny Hedge

The pencil is under the table, breakfast is cold, and B is suddenly the worst letter in the alphabet.

Let's make the next ten minutes easier

Sunny Hedge is the pen name on articles written and edited for Whizki Learning. Those articles begin with the questions parents and teachers ask when a plan has gone sideways. Sometimes a three-minute game is enough. On another day, a different crayon helps. And yes, sometimes the page can wait until tomorrow.

Start smaller than you think

A page does not have to be finished to count. Five calm minutes can be enough, especially when your child is tired and you are, too.

Check the mood first

If your child is hungry, wiggly, or simply done, make the activity smaller before you ask for more.

Pick the tiniest win

Trace three letters. Count the forks. Read one page twice. Stop while it still feels good.

Use what is already there

Crayons, blocks, toy animals, and the socks from the dryer can all become practice. No special setup required.

Where should we start?

Pencil practice may keep ending in an argument, or school may suddenly feel very close. Some days you just need something simple before dinner. Start with the part that sounds like your house.

What's happening at your house today?

Maybe it is pencil practice. Maybe it is first-day nerves. Maybe you need ten quiet minutes and something simple to put on the table. Start there.
