Needs and Wants Sorting Worksheet

The Needs and Wants Sorting Worksheet is a preschool social studies printable for practicing the difference between needs and wants. Children look at familiar everyday items, name each item, and decide whether each item belongs with things people must have or things people would like to have.

At age four, children are just starting to understand that food, water, clothing, and shelter are different from toys, treats, and special extras. Kids often say every favorite item is a need, so the worksheet gives a calm place to slow down, talk, and practice making a simple choice.

A parent or teacher can sit beside the child, point to one picture at a time, and ask, “Do people need this to be safe and healthy, or is this something people enjoy?” After the child answers, invite the child to explain the choice in one short sentence before moving to the next picture.

The worksheet works well because the pictures connect to real preschool life, not abstract money lessons. The page keeps the task small, visual, and screen-free, so the adult and child can focus on conversation, vocabulary, and early decision-making together.
