Past and Present Sorting Worksheet

The Past and Present Sorting Worksheet is a printable social studies page for 1st grade children learning how to compare life long ago with life today. The worksheet practices past and present thinking by asking a child to notice details, talk about time, and decide where examples belong.

At age 6, children are starting to understand that families, schools, homes, clothing, transportation, and tools can change over time. Many first graders can say something is old or new, but children often stall when the page asks for a reason. The worksheet gives a clear place to slow down, look closely, and say, “I know because...”

A parent or teacher can sit beside the child and point to one picture or prompt at a time. Ask, “What clue shows past?” or “What clue shows present?” After the child answers, invite the child to add one real-life example, such as a phone used today or a way people traveled long ago.

The worksheet is useful because the page keeps the task focused on simple comparisons instead of asking a child to memorize dates. The child practices time vocabulary, observation, and spoken reasoning in one short off-screen activity that works well at the kitchen table, in a small group, or as a quick review after a lesson.
