Write Ten Words in Syllable Parts

This syllable splitting worksheet uses familiar words to practice hearing the larger spoken parts within a word. Say ten printed words and write each one with a slash between its syllable parts, following the example on the page. An adult can read the words aloud so independent reading does not become a barrier to the listening task.

Begin with a short example: pear has one syllable, apple has two, and banana has three. Say each word naturally, then tap or clap once for each spoken part. For the written response, apple can be shown as ap/ple and banana as ba/na/na. A one-syllable word such as pear stays whole, with no dividing slash. Return to the whole word after discussing its parts.

Syllable practice belongs to phonological awareness. A syllable can contain several individual speech sounds, so count the spoken beats rather than the letters on the page. Model an unfamiliar word before asking for a response, and use a natural pronunciation instead of stretching letters into extra beats. If a word sounds different in your family’s speech, listen together and discuss the pronunciation being used for the example.
