Tool or Service? Repairing the Gate

Children often see a helper holding a tool and call the tool the whole job, and that can make community helper talk a little muddy. If your child says, “The hammer fixes it,” start with this simple page and help them slow down, look closely, and name what Bunny is actually doing.

On this printable worksheet, your child reads a short story about Bunny holding a hammer and repairing a gate. Then they circle the object Bunny uses for the job, explain the difference between the hammer and the repair service, and use the response stems “My idea” and “My reason” to put their thinking into words.

Use the page as a quick read, point, circle, and talk activity. Read the story aloud once, ask your child to find the tool, and then prompt, “What work is Bunny doing for someone else?” In a classroom or homeschool group, let partners share one idea and listen for a different idea.

This worksheet is part of the Grade 1 Social Studies Adventures set in the Whizki Plus tier on Whizki Learning. The set explores everyday Social Studies through illustrated Grade 1 activities, conversation, and drawing, with this page focusing on community helpers, objects, work, and why helpful services matter.

Keep the session short and useful. Aim for 5 to 10 minutes, and write your child’s spoken answer if handwriting slows the thinking. End by naming one real repair job they have seen at home, school, or in the neighborhood.
