Tell a Grown-Up About a Garden Gate Problem

It can be hard to teach “tell an adult” without making every small problem feel like an emergency. This page gives your child a calm, concrete way to notice a shared-space problem, say what they see, and ask for help safely.

Children read a short story about a shared garden gate that needs work. They circle the gate they want to report, then dictate a message asking a grown-up to arrange a repair. The cause-and-effect layout supports observation, community helper vocabulary, oral language, and the important idea that kids can report problems without using tools themselves.

Use it after reading the story aloud together or during a small-group social studies lesson. Ask, “What did you notice?” and “Why does the repair matter?” If writing is still tiring, let the child speak while you write the message, then invite them to add a drawing, check mark, or name.

This printable belongs to the Grade 1 Social Studies Adventures set in Whizki Plus. It fits the set’s focus on everyday community situations, illustrated problem solving, conversation, and drawing, with a grade 1 friendly prompt that connects helpers, responsibility, and shared spaces.

Keep the session short: read, circle, dictate, and talk for five to ten minutes. End by practicing one sentence starter, such as “I noticed” or “My reason,” so the child leaves with a usable way to speak up next time.
