What Does a Repair Helper Do in the Community?

Community helper lessons can get a little abstract when children know a job exists, but are not sure why it matters. This printable gives you one clear, everyday example, a neighbor needs help fixing a gate, so the idea of a service feels concrete instead of distant.

On the page, children read a short story about a bunny doing repair work for neighbors. They circle the person doing the work, then answer two prompts: what the service is and how it helps the neighborhood. The cause and effect layout supports reading comprehension, social studies vocabulary, and oral or written explanation.

Try reading the story aloud first, then ask your child to point to the worker before using a crayon or pencil to circle. If writing is still tiring, let your child say the answer while you lightly scribe it, then invite them to trace or copy one important word such as service, gate, or help.

This one-page activity belongs to the Whizki Learning Grade 1 Social Studies Adventures set in the Whizki Plus tier. The set uses illustrated scenes, conversation prompts, and drawing or response spaces to build understanding of community, helpers, needs, services, and everyday civic life.

Keep it short and useful. Spend two minutes on the story, three minutes on circling and answering, and one final minute naming another helpful job, such as fixing a sink, delivering mail, or cleaning a park.
