Passing a Story Along: Preschool Social Studies

This family traditions worksheet asks children to notice a repeated shared activity and connect it with a drawing or personal example. Someone taught these friends a story. Now they enjoy sharing it with each other. The illustrated activity includes two prompts and a conversation starter. Read the situation together, then look at the details named in the instructions before choosing, drawing, tracing, or explaining a response. An adult can read the words aloud so the child can concentrate on the idea being explored.

The first prompt is: Point to the book they are using. The second asks: Draw someone you could ask to share a story with you. Take the prompts in that order, giving the child time to point out the relevant part of the scene or explain a choice. Ask what they noticed before offering your own example, and connect any mark on the page with its meaning.

The picnic is a make-believe example of people spending time together repeatedly. Invite a familiar example from the child’s own life, such as a shared story or everyday routine. Families may bring different foods, include different people, or repeat different activities. Let the child explain the drawing before offering your own interpretation of it.
