Measurement & Data in 1st Grade1.MD Standards

Short answer. This is the grab-bag domain of 1st grade, and honestly the most useful one at home. It covers three different life skills: measuring length, telling time, and making sense of simple data. Your child will order three objects from shortest to longest, measure a book by laying paper clips end to end, read a clock to the hour and half hour, and answer questions about a chart with three categories.

Each skill gets its own cluster. 1.MD.A handles length, including the clever trick of comparing two objects using a third one. 1.MD.B is time on both analog and digital clocks. 1.MD.C is data: organizing it, showing it, and answering how many more or fewer are in one category than another. No rulers with inches yet; the measuring is done with repeated same-size units first, on purpose.

Every 1.MD standard, in order

Open a code for the official wording, a plain-English answer, what the skill can look like at home, and simple activities. The list below follows the Common Core sequence.

01
Cluster

Measure lengths indirectly and by iterating length units.

2 standards

  1. 1.MD.A.1Putting Three Objects in Order by Length (1.MD.A.1)

Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object.

  2. 1.MD.A.2Measuring Length With Same-Size Units (1.MD.A.2)

Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps. Limit to contexts where the object being measured is spanned by a whole number of length units with no gaps or overlaps.

02
Cluster

Tell and write time.

1 standard

  1. 1.MD.B.3Telling Time to the Hour and Half-Hour (1.MD.B.3)

Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks.

03
Cluster

Represent and interpret data.

1 standard

  1. 1.MD.C.4Sorting and Comparing Data in Three Categories (1.MD.C.4)

Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another.
