Measurement & Data in KindergartenK.MD Standards

Short answer. No rulers yet. Kindergarten measurement is about noticing and talking: this pencil is longer than that one, this backpack is heavy, my cup holds more. Your child learns to name measurable attributes like length and weight, describe more than one attribute of the same object, and directly compare two things (standing back to back to see who's taller counts).

The domain has two clusters. K.MD.A covers describing and comparing measurable attributes, and K.MD.B covers sorting objects into categories and counting how many land in each, which is your child's first taste of data. Expect a year of 'which one is heavier?' questions and sock-sorting that secretly counts as math homework.

Every K.MD standard, in order

Open a code for the official wording, a plain-English answer, what the skill can look like at home, and simple activities. The list below follows the Common Core sequence.

01
Cluster

Describe and compare measurable attributes.

2 standards

  1. K.MD.A.1Describing Length, Weight, and Size (K.MD.A.1)

Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measurable attributes of a single object.

  2. K.MD.A.2Comparing Objects: Taller, Heavier, Longer (K.MD.A.2)

Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has "more of"/"less of" the attribute, and describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter.

02
Cluster

Classify objects and count the number of objects in each category.

1 standard

  1. K.MD.B.3Sorting Objects and Counting Each Group (K.MD.B.3)

Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by count.
