Reading: Informational Text in 1st Grade (RI.1)RI.1 Standards
Short answer. First graders start reading nonfiction like little researchers, and RI.1 is the checklist. Your child learns to name a book's main topic and retell its key details, use headings, tables of contents, and glossaries to find facts fast, and tell the difference between what the photos show and what the words say. He'll also start noticing the reasons an author gives for a claim, which is the seed of critical reading.
Like its literature twin, the domain runs in four clusters. Key Ideas and Details covers topics, details, and connections between people, events, and ideas. Craft and Structure brings in word meanings and text features. Integration of Knowledge and Ideas covers illustrations, an author's reasons, and comparing two books on one topic. Range of Reading expects grade 1 informational texts, with prompting and support still allowed.
