In Meet Our Friends, children complete four sentences with words from am, is, are. The pictures support the sentence or noun phrase; the written choices show which language decision to make. Read the direction aloud and work through one example together. Adult support can keep an unfamiliar word from getting in the way of the skill being practiced.
I am a panda. It is a kite. We are friends. They are cats. Say a complete phrase or sentence before marking the response. Check that the choice fits the whole statement, then let the child try the next example with less prompting. Pause when needed and keep the printed text available as a reference.
Read the subject before choosing the verb. I takes am; one pictured thing with it takes is; you, we, and they take are in these present-tense examples. Say the completed sentence aloud, and compare the selected verb with the subject rather than guessing from a picture alone. The follow-up asks: “Draw yourself. Finish: I am ...” Read the completed responses back together. If an answer sounds uncertain, point to the relevant subject, noun, or sentence type and try it again.
Find related activities in the grammar and sentences collection. The Spelling and Word Building set offers more supported written-language practice. Use a short part of the page when reading or writing takes effort, then return to the remaining examples later. A brief spoken follow-up using familiar words can help the child explain the same idea in a new sentence.
