Bright Colors for a Rainy Day Story Coloring

Bright Colors for a Rainy Day is a one-page story coloring worksheet for first grade. The page asks a child to color one small thing red, use other colors for the rest of the picture, and tell a story that begins with the red detail. The activity practices pre-writing planning, careful coloring, and oral storytelling before a child has to write full sentences.

At age six, many children have plenty to say but stall when a blank line or long writing task appears. A small visual choice can make the first idea feel less slippery. The red detail gives the child a clear starting point, which supports story order, vocabulary, and confidence with early writing work.

A parent or teacher can sit nearby and say, “Find one tiny thing in the rainy day picture that should be red.” After the child colors the rest of the picture, the adult can ask, “What happened first with the red detail?” The child can answer out loud while the adult listens, asks one simple follow-up question, and keeps the focus on the picture.

The worksheet is useful because the color direction is narrow, but the story can go many ways. A generic coloring page may end when the crayons go away. Bright Colors for a Rainy Day turns one small red choice into a story starter, giving a first grader an easy bridge from coloring to language.
