Learning Outcomes

Compare objects from the past and present. The child draws one older object and one current object that do a similar job.

Explain a shared function. The worksheet asks the child to tell what job both objects help people do.

Support an observation with a reason. Sentence stems guide the child to state an idea, give a reason, and notice a difference.

It can be hard to make “the past” feel real when a child’s first answer is, “That was a long time ago.” This printable gives you an easy next step: start with one everyday object and ask a grown-up how it used to look or work.

On the page, your child compares an object from two times. They draw the older version under “Then” and the current version under “Now,” then explain the job both objects do and name one difference they can support. The museum scene and pointing beaver set up the idea of looking closely, while the response stems “My idea,” “My reason,” and “I noticed” help children organize their thinking.

Use it as a short interview page at home, in a small group, or during a social studies center. Pick one object together, invite a parent, grandparent, neighbor, or teacher to share what they know, then let your child draw first and talk second. If the grown-up says the object has not changed much, that can still be a thoughtful answer when the child explains why.

This worksheet is part of the Whizki Learning “Grade 1 Social Studies Adventures” set in the Whizki Plus tier. The set explores everyday social studies through illustrated Grade 1 activities, conversation, and drawing, so children can connect big ideas like past and present to familiar people and objects.

Keep the session simple and screen-free. Set a crayon or pencil out, ask one interview question, and spend 5 to 10 minutes drawing and finishing one sentence stem together.
