Learning Outcomes

Compare past and present play objects. Children draw one object from a grown-up’s childhood and one object they enjoy today.

Ask interview questions to gather information. The worksheet gives children a real reason to listen to a grown-up’s memory before drawing.

Identify similarities and differences over time. Children use the Then and Now frames to talk about how play objects were used.

Playtime Then and Now Family Museum Interview

Finding a calm social studies activity can be tricky when kids want to move, grown-ups are busy, and “ask someone” feels too open-ended. This printable gives you a clear next step: invite one adult to share a play memory, then let your child record the comparison on paper.

On the page, children see a museum scene with an elephant guide and two labeled drawing frames, Then and Now. They ask a grown-up what they played with as a child, draw that play object under Then, draw a favorite play object from today under Now, and talk about one way the objects are alike or different.

Use it at the kitchen table, during a class family-history unit, or as a homeschool conversation starter. Read the short story aloud first, help your child choose a grown-up to interview, and jot a dictated note if writing still gets in the way of sharing the idea.

This one-page activity belongs to the “Grade 1 Social Studies Adventures” set in the Whizki Plus tier. The set explores everyday Social Studies through illustrated Grade 1 activities, conversation, and drawing, so children can connect community, family, time, and personal experience in a hands-on way.

Keep the session short and friendly. Spend two minutes asking the grown-up, three or four minutes drawing, and one minute pointing to each frame while your child says, “Then” and “Now.” Stop before the conversation turns into a quiz.
