Learning Outcomes

Compare past and present objects. Children draw one object a grown-up used as a child and one object they use today for the same purpose.

Ask questions to learn from a primary source. The worksheet prompts children to gather information from a real grown-up's memory before drawing.

Describe change and continuity. Children explain what changed between the two objects and what stayed the same in how people used them.

Create a Then-and-Now Family Museum Exhibit

Family history can feel too big for a young child, especially when everyone is busy and you are trying to make social studies feel real, not like a lecture. This page gives you one simple starting point: ask a grown-up about an object they used as a child, then compare it with something your child uses today.

On the worksheet, children create a small museum-style exhibit with two labeled frames, Then and Now. They draw the grown-up's childhood object in the left frame and their own current object in the right frame. The prompts guide them to notice what changed, what stayed the same, and whose memory helped them make the exhibit.

Use it as a quick interview activity at the kitchen table, in a classroom social studies center, or during homeschool history time. Read the story prompt aloud, help your child choose one grown-up to ask, and jot a few words if your child wants support explaining the comparison after drawing.

This printable is part of the Whizki Plus set, Grade 1 Social Studies Adventures. The set explores everyday social studies through illustrated Grade 1 activities, conversation, and drawing, so children can connect big ideas like past and present to people, objects, and routines they already know.

For a short session, keep the interview to one object and one question first. If your child has more to say, let them add labels or tell the exhibit story aloud before you tuck the page into a folder.
