Learning Outcomes

Compare school tools from past and present. The child draws one adult memory and one current object to notice similarities and differences.

Ask an interview question about everyday history. The worksheet practices listening to a grown-up’s school memory and using it as evidence for the “Then” drawing.

Describe what stayed the same and what changed. The prompts guide the child to talk about use, purpose, or appearance without assuming every object changed.

School Tools Then and Now: Family Museum Interview

When social studies turns into “a long time ago,” kids can tune out fast, and grown-ups may not know where to start. This page gives you one easy next step: ask a real person about school, then help your child put that memory beside life today.

On this printable, children compare school tools from two times. They ask a grown-up about something used at school as a child, choose a school object they use now, then draw the adult’s object in the “Then” frame and their own object in the “Now” frame. The prompts guide them to tell what is different and what is the same.

Use it at the kitchen table, in a small group, or as a simple take-home interview. Read the story prompt aloud first, give your child a crayon or pencil, and let the grown-up share one clear memory. If the object did not change much, that is useful too, because the comparison can show sameness.

This worksheet is part of the Whizki Learning Plus set, “Grade 1 Social Studies Adventures.” The set builds everyday social studies through illustrated Grade 1 activities, conversation, and drawing, so children can connect family stories, community ideas, and past-and-present thinking without a screen.

Keep the session short and conversational. Spend two minutes asking, five minutes drawing, and one minute saying, “I learned that…” before putting the page away.
