A Garden for the Neighborhood: Grade 1 Social Studies

This picture maps and keys worksheet asks children to add a useful place to a map and connect its symbol with a key entry. Use the key to read this picture map. Plan a new place where neighbors could grow plants together. The illustrated activity includes two prompts and a conversation starter. Read the situation together, then look at the details named in the instructions before choosing, drawing, tracing, or explaining a response. An adult can read the words aloud so the child can concentrate on the idea being explored.

The first prompt is: Draw a shared garden in the white space. Mark it with X. The second asks: Add X to the key. Explain who could use your garden. Take the prompts in that order, giving the child time to point out the relevant part of the scene or explain a choice. Ask what they noticed before offering your own example, and connect any mark on the page with its meaning.

Read the existing key together before adding anything to the map. Draw the requested place in the open area, mark it with X, and add a matching explanation in the key. The symbol’s position shows where the place is; the key tells another reader what the symbol means. Ask how a neighbor could reach or use the new place. The conversation starter continues the activity: Show a route from the market to your new garden.
