Use a Neighborhood Map Key: Add a Picnic Place

Map skills can feel tricky when a child wants to draw right away, and you are trying to help them slow down, notice symbols, and explain their thinking. This printable gives that busy moment a clear job: look at the neighborhood map, use the key, and add one helpful place.

On the page, children see a neighborhood map with letter symbols for Home, Library, Park, and Market. They draw a picnic area in the white space, mark it with X, add X to the map key, and tell why that location is a good place for neighbors to gather. The talk prompt asks them to show a route from the library to the picnic area, building location words, map key understanding, and early community planning.

Use it after a read-aloud about neighborhoods, during a social studies center, or as a homeschool geography mini-lesson. Invite your child to point to each key item first, then trace a finger route on the map before picking the picnic spot. If writing the reason is hard, let them dictate while you write their sentence.

This worksheet belongs to the Whizki Plus set, Grade 1 Social Studies Adventures, a premium collection of illustrated pages about everyday communities, maps, helpers, rules, and places. It fits especially well when you want a screen-free activity that mixes drawing, conversation, and grade 1 social studies vocabulary.

Keep the session short and upbeat. Five to ten minutes is plenty: read the key, draw and mark the picnic area, add the new symbol, then ask, “How would you get there from the library?”
