Use a map key to connect a symbol with its meaning. The worksheet practices this by asking children to mark a new place with X and add that symbol to the key.

Explain why maps need updates when a community changes. The page practices this by having children respond to a new recycling station being added to the neighborhood.

Represent a neighborhood feature on a simple map. Children practice by drawing the station in the white space and placing the symbol where it belongs.

Update a Neighborhood Map Key for a New Place

Neighborhood maps can feel abstract to young learners, especially when a child wants to draw first and explain later. This page gives that energy a clear job: help an old neighborhood map show a new recycling station.

On the worksheet, children look at an illustrated neighborhood map and use the map key to understand what symbols mean. Then they draw the recycling station in the white space, mark it with an X, add the X to the key, and explain why the map and key both need to change.

Try it as a short table activity with a pencil and crayon. Read the story prompt aloud, point to the map key together, then ask, “If someone else looked at your map, would they know what the X means?” The sentence starters, “My idea” and “My reason,” help children move from drawing to social studies thinking.

This printable is part of the Whizki Learning Grade 1 Social Studies Adventures set in the Whizki Plus tier. The set uses everyday places, kid-friendly illustrations, conversation, and drawing to build early understanding of maps, communities, choices, and shared spaces.

Keep the session simple and screen-free. Spend two minutes noticing the map, three minutes drawing and updating the key, and a few minutes talking about why clear map symbols help neighbors understand a place after it changes.
