Learning Outcomes

Read a simple map task. The worksheet asks the child to notice the neighborhood space, the key area, and the request before drawing.

Use a map key to represent a new place. The child marks the added place with X and adds X to the key.

Explain a design choice. The sentence stems guide the child to state an idea and give a reason tied to the request.

Design for a Neighbor: Map Key Planning Activity

It can be hard to make social studies feel concrete when a child is wiggly, tired, or unsure why maps matter. This printable gives that big idea a simple job: listen to a neighbor's request, then plan a helpful place on a neighborhood map.

On the page, children look at an illustrated neighborhood map with a key area and a blank space for planning. They draw the suggested place in the white space, mark it with X, add X to the map key, and use the sentence stems My idea and My reason to explain how the plan answers the request.

Try it as a partner talk, small-group station, or homeschool table activity. Ask one child or adult to suggest a useful place the neighborhood could add. Then have the child repeat the request in their own words before drawing, so listening becomes part of the map work.

This worksheet is part of the Grade 1 Social Studies Adventures set in the Whizki Plus tier, with illustrated activities for everyday civics, geography, conversation, and drawing. It keeps the focus on first grade social studies skills, including map symbols, community needs, and explaining choices with evidence from the prompt.

Keep the session short: two minutes to talk, four minutes to draw and label, and two minutes to explain. If writing is frustrating, let the child dictate the reason while you write their words, then invite them to trace or copy one phrase.
