Learning Outcomes

Compare past and present communication. The child looks at a phone call and a letter to notice what changed and what stayed the same.

Identify a written message. The child circles the letter to show which choice can be read again later.

Explain a reason for keeping a letter. The child gives an oral or dictated response using evidence from the page.

Past and Present Messages: Phone Call or Letter

It can be surprisingly hard to explain then and now without turning it into a lecture. Young children often know phones, but they may not yet see why people saved letters, cards, or notes. This page gives you one clear, screen-free comparison to start the conversation.

On the page, a friendly elephant points in a museum-style scene with two labeled picture frames: Phone call and Letter. Children look at both pictures, circle the way to send a written message, then explain why someone might want to keep a letter. They practice visual comparison, social studies vocabulary, fine motor control, and evidence-based speaking.

Use the worksheet as a quick talk-and-circle activity. Read the short story aloud, ask your child to point to each message type, then have them circle the letter. If writing is still hard, invite them to say the sentence while you jot down their words.

This printable is part of Kindergarten Social Studies Adventures in the Whizki Plus tier. The set explores everyday social studies through illustrated activities, conversation, and drawing, so children can connect past and present ideas to family life, classroom routines, and familiar community experiences.

Keep the session short and concrete. In 5 to 10 minutes, your child can circle the answer, share one reason a letter can be kept, and ask a grown-up how they shared news when they were little.
