Learning Outcomes

Compares past and present communication. The child listens to an adult example and looks for what changed or stayed the same.

Asks a social studies question. The worksheet prompts the child to gather information from a grown-up instead of guessing from the pictures alone.

Explains an idea with a reason. The response stems help the child say what they noticed and why a picture may or may not match the story.

Ask About How Messages Changed Over Time

It can be tricky to explain “the past” when your child lives in a world of quick calls, texts, and video chats. This page gives that big idea a small, real next step: ask a grown-up how they shared news with someone far away when they were young.

On the worksheet, children look at a museum scene with an elephant guide and two labeled picture choices: Letter and Phone call. After hearing a real adult story, the child circles a picture if it matches, then tells what they learned. The page builds listening, past-and-present comparison, vocabulary, and respectful conversation.

Use it as a short interview activity. Read the story prompt aloud, invite your child to ask the question, and give the grown-up time to answer. If the answer is different from both pictures, that is okay. Your child can still use the response stems, such as “My idea,” “My reason,” or “I noticed,” to explain their thinking.

This printable belongs to Kindergarten Social Studies Adventures, a Whizki Plus set on Whizki Learning that explores everyday social studies through illustrated kindergarten activities, conversation, and drawing. In this Past & Present activity, children notice that communication tools can change while the need to share news stays familiar.

Keep the session to 5 to 10 minutes. If attention gets wiggly, choose one adult story, circle or discuss one picture, and end with one sentence that starts with “I noticed.”
