Learning Outcomes

Compares two ways people share messages. The worksheet asks children to look at a phone call and a letter and notice what each one does.

Identifies how a phone call supports a quick reply. Children practice by circling the choice that lets people hear an answer while they talk.

Explains a shared purpose across different communication tools. The page prompts children to say that both choices can share news, feelings, messages, or ideas.

Compare Phone Calls and Letters: Past and Present

When kids hear past and present, it can feel too abstract, especially if your group is wiggly or your child wants to know why anyone would send a letter. Start with one concrete question: How do people share news when they cannot be in the same room?

On this one-page worksheet, children look at a museum scene with a beaver guide, a phone call picture, and a letter picture. They circle the way people can hear an answer while they talk, then tell what both choices let people share. The page practices observation, comparing, social studies vocabulary, and spoken reasoning.

Use it screen-free at a table, morning bin, or small group center. Read the short story line aloud, point to each frame label, and let the child choose with a crayon. After the circle response, ask for one sentence about how the two message methods are alike.

This printable belongs to Kindergarten Social Studies Adventures, a Whizki Plus set about everyday community life, families, places, and past and present ideas. The activity fits the set by turning a familiar topic, sharing news, into a simple compare-and-talk page.

Keep the session short and friendly. If attention fades, finish the circle first and save the grown-up question for later: How did you share news when you were a child? A quick real story makes the idea stick.
