Plan a Neighborhood Route From Home

Direction words can get messy fast with young children, especially when everyone is pointing at the page and talking at once. If your child can picture a place but struggles to explain how to get there, start with one calm route and a listening job.

On this printable neighborhood map worksheet, children choose a trip that starts at Home and visits two other places on the picture map. They say the stops out loud before drawing, then ask a partner to trace the route they described. The page practices map awareness, sequencing, direction language, careful listening, and checking whether a route matches an idea.

Use the page at a table with one crayon or pencil. Point to Home, let your child choose two stops, and have them begin with the stem “My idea” or “My reason.” You or a classmate trace the route they explain. Then switch into detective mode and ask, “Does the traced path match what you said?”
