Instead of treating 10 - 8 as 'count backward from 10,' this standard asks your child to think of it as a fill-in-the-blank addition problem: 8 plus what makes 10? Same answer, different road. It sounds like a small shift, but it lets kids answer subtraction questions using the addition facts they already know.

Why this matters

Counting backward is slow and error-prone for most 6 year olds, while 'what do I add to get there' plays to their strength. This connection between addition and subtraction is also the same thinking behind fact families now and solving equations like 8 + x = 10 down the road.

You do not need a lesson plan. Look for these signs in ordinary play, reading, and conversation, then choose one short activity.

What you may notice

  • Your child answers 12 - 9 by saying something like '9 and 3 more is 12, so it's 3.'
  • They can finish the sentence '7 plus what makes 10?' quickly, without counting from 1.
  • They see that 6 + 4 = 10 and 10 - 6 = 4 are the same relationship dressed differently.
  • They stop reaching backward on their fingers for every subtraction problem.

    Cup Cover-Up

    Count out 10 beans together, then cover some with a cup while your child looks away. Show the leftovers: 'You can see 6. How many are hiding?' They have to think '6 plus what makes 10,' which is the whole standard in one move. Lift the cup to check, then trade jobs.

    Missing Sock Pairs

    Tell your child the dryer started with 14 socks and hand them the 8 that survived. Ask how many the dryer ate. Encourage the addition frame: '8 plus how many gets us back to 14?' Ridiculous premise, real math, and it works with any household count under 20.

    Answer It Both Ways

    Write one problem, like 11 - 7, on paper. Ask your child to solve it two ways: once by taking away, once by asking '7 plus what is 11?' Talk about which felt faster. One problem, two roads, five minutes, done.

Is this the same thing as fact families?
