Speaking & Listening in 1st GradeSL.1 Standards
Short answer. A 1st grader who talks your ear off is halfway to mastering this domain; the other half is listening. SL.1 raises the kindergarten bar: instead of just taking turns, your child now builds on what someone else said, asks questions to clear up confusion, and answers questions about a read-aloud or a video with real detail. Speaking in complete sentences, when the situation calls for it, joins the list too.
Two clusters split the standards. Comprehension and Collaboration covers conversations with peers and adults, questions about texts read aloud, and follow-up questions for a speaker. Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas covers describing people, places, and events with relevant details, adding drawings to make an idea clear, and producing complete sentences. Teachers watch these skills during circle time and partner work, which is why they can feel invisible to parents at home.
