Count Animal Groups and Choose the Number

This count-and-choose worksheet presents 3 main activities and a follow-up number task. Each row contains an animal group and four number choices. The child counts the pictures and circles the numeral representing the group. The page uses quantities within 10.

Count the first group of pandas: it contains 10 pictures. Point once to each picture and say the counting words in order. Choose the total from the four numerals after counting, then repeat the process with the next group. Nearby choices encourage careful checking rather than guessing from a quick glance.

The extension compares 10 and 5 and asks for the greater number. Represent both with counters if needed, then explain which group has more. This follow-up connects counting with comparison. Work through the main activities one at a time, using a finger to track pictures and a recount to check the numeral selected.

Continue with related activities in the Early Math Essentials. The number reference library offers another look at the numerals and quantities used in early math. Choose a few questions that the child can discuss comfortably, then return to the page during another short practice session. A useful next step is asking the child to explain one answer using a different drawing or a small group of counters.
