Find Missing Parts in Addition and Subtraction

This missing numbers worksheet contains four addition and subtraction equations with one empty answer space each. The blank can replace a starting amount, an amount added or taken away, or the result. Read the whole equation before choosing a number. The extra activity asks the child to make a number trail beginning at 5.

Use the operation sign and the position of the blank to decide what is unknown. A missing starting amount may require rebuilding the whole, while a missing result asks for the calculation directly. Model the equation with counters or a separate number line, keeping the known values visible. Put the proposed number back into the original equation to check that both sides are equal.

For the follow-up, start at 5 and continue by one through the number trail. An adult can read the instructions, point to the starting value, and ask the child to say the next number before writing it. Work through the addition and subtraction rows separately at first if changing operations causes confusion. Recheck the full row after filling each blank so the answer remains connected to its surrounding numbers.
