Learning Outcomes
Picture word → identify and swap the first sound only → create a new word that matches the child’s spoken sounds.
New word practice → blend the new first sound with the rest of the word → produce clear word changes with less hesitation over time.
Sound play routine → listen for word start sounds and compare results → strengthen early reading readiness through quick, repeatable practice.

Sound Substitution Word Change Worksheet
This worksheet practices sound substitution by asking the child to change the first sound of each picture word to make a new word. Picture examples include dog to cog and cat to hat.
At age 5, first-sound play builds a useful habit, listening closely to how words start. Letter-shape worksheets can feel slow, but switching sounds stays quick and hands-on.
Use this page for a short shared round. Choose 3 boxes, say the starting word out loud, and ask the child to replace only the first sound, then write or say the new word the worksheet calls for.
This worksheet is different from a generic printable because each item is a clear “one sound change” challenge. The child can hear the difference, try again easily, and keep the momentum going with picture words that make sense right away.
