Number Compare Kindergarten Worksheet

Kids often stall when math language changes from counting to comparing. On this kindergarten math page, they look at two numbers at a time and decide whether one is greater, smaller, or equal. Keep it light: read the two numbers together, pause, and let them say what they notice before they mark an answer.

This is a good fit when a five-year-old can recognize some numbers and is ready to talk about “more,” “less,” and “same.” If the choice feels too quick or too abstract, pull out small objects like crackers, buttons, or blocks. Build each number, then compare the two groups before coming back to the printed problem.

The practice works because each item asks for one clear decision. Children read or name the two numbers, compare their values, and choose the relationship. That routine builds careful number sense without a long set of directions. You can ask, “Which number would come later if we counted?” or “Are these two the same amount?”

Sit nearby for the first few problems and model the thinking out loud once, then let them try. If they guess, bring it back to counting, objects, or a number line if you have one. When comparing feels steady, move into story problems with little math stories for addition and subtraction, then try another addition and subtraction story worksheet to connect number comparison with simple changes in amounts.
