Number Comparison Worksheet for First Grade

Seven-year-olds can know the counting sequence and still pause when they have to compare two numbers on paper. This page keeps the task clear: look at each pair, decide which number is greater, smaller, or equal, and choose the comparison that fits. It is a good fit for a short, screen-free math moment at the table.

This practice works best when a child can read the numbers on the page and has had some experience counting forward and backward. If the numbers feel too big at first, sit nearby with a number line, fingers, or small counters. The goal is not speed. The goal is to notice size, order, and when two amounts match.

As your child compares each pair, ask simple questions like, “Which number would come later when you count?” or “How do you know they are the same?” That small explanation helps you hear the strategy, whether it is counting, place value, or recognizing a familiar number. For more of the same skill, try a second number comparison page for fresh pairs, then use another greater, smaller, equal practice page when your child is ready to repeat the routine with less help.

If frustration shows up, cover part of the page and do just a few pairs together. You can read the numbers aloud, then let your child make the choice and tell why. A helpful next step is to compare two simple totals from addition or subtraction work, using the same greater, smaller, or equal language after the answers are found.
