Learning Outcomes
First graders → sound substitution (first-sound swaps) → build new words like dog to cog, strengthening early reading and spelling.
Child → listens for the first sound and replaces it → read and write unfamiliar words with more confidence and less guessing.
Practice page → quick first-sound changes → creates a repeatable routine that fits short attention spans during first grade.

Sound Substitution Reading and Writing Worksheet
This reading and writing worksheet practices sound substitution by changing the FIRST sound of each word to make a new word, like dog to cog or cat to hat.
At this age, first-sound changes help first graders read and spell words with more control. When letter-shape work feels slow or frustrating, the worksheet gives a quick “change one sound” task that stays focused.
Try one row together: read the starting word, then change only the first sound to reach the new word. Say the sounds, blend them, and read the finished word, pointing to the first sound box as the child makes the swap.
The worksheet is useful because each item practices the same small move again and again, without turning it into memorizing whole words. Use it for a 5 to 10 minute parent-child moment, then stop while the child still feels successful.
