A picture can stand for a number in an equation, which gives children a new way to reason about familiar arithmetic. This picture equation puzzle worksheet contains two puzzle blocks. Use the printed clues to work out the value of each picture, then use those values in the final expression. Choose this activity after ordinary addition equations feel familiar enough to discuss with support.

The first block includes printed equation results of 14 and 6. Start with a clue that gives information about a repeated picture. Each appearance of that picture has the same value within its puzzle block. Compare the symbols, notice whether amounts are joined or taken away, and explain what the printed total tells you. Write a found value on separate paper if it helps the child keep track while considering the next clue.

Substitute a found value back into an earlier equation to check that it works. Then use it alongside the next clue to find the other picture value. In the final expression, include every repeated picture before calculating. The pictures act as number symbols here: counting the visible drawings alone does not give the answer. An adult can ask which clue supports a choice without supplying the value.
