Count each picture in a group once, coordinating a spoken number name with each object rather than skipping or recounting an item.

Use the last number said when counting to name the quantity of the whole group, then connect that total with a written numeral.

Check a counted group with a consistent counting path and explain how the pictures were included before recording the answer.

Saying number names in order is one step; keeping track of a whole group is another. This counting objects worksheet asks children to count the pictures in each group and write the total in its answer space. The page includes a group of apple pictures and other illustrated quantities. Start with one group and read its direction before moving to the next. Use it for supported early math practice at home or in a classroom.

The apple group contains 3 pictures. Touch each one once while saying the number names in order, then repeat the final number to name the whole quantity. Help the child find the matching written numeral before recording it. Count the pictures themselves; their colors, sizes, or the space between them do not change how many belong to that group.

If a child loses track, model moving steadily through one row or section before continuing to another. Count again to check an uncertain total, using a finger to show which pictures have already been included. Writing the numeral can be a separate difficulty: an adult may provide a number model on plain paper so the child can focus first on finding the quantity. Ask how the child checked the group before moving on.

The number reference library provides another look at individual numerals and their values. The Early Math Essentials set offers related counting and number activities. For a hands-on follow-up, make one pictured quantity with counters on the table, rearrange them, and check that the total stays the same. Work through a few groups at a time and return to the rest when the child can count comfortably again.
