Little Math Stories is a first grade math worksheet that practices addition and subtraction word problems within 20. Children read three short stories, solve 5 plus 10 frogs, 15 minus 8 flowers, and 6 plus 14 apples, then write the answer for each question.
Seven-year-olds are often ready for bigger numbers, but story problems can still make children pause. A child may know how to count, then stall when deciding whether a story means add more or take away.
Sit beside the child and read one story aloud at a time. Ask the child to circle the action words, such as jump over, takes out, or adds more, then use fingers, counters, or quick dots to act out the frogs, flowers, and apples before writing each answer.
