At age 5, many children can count aloud before written number words feel familiar. A child may say seven quickly, then stall when the word seven appears on paper, so the worksheet slows the task down to one clear match at a time.
Sit beside the child and point to the first word. Read the word together, ask which numeral belongs in the box, and let the child write the numeral. If the child hesitates, count fingers together, say the number word again, and try the box once more.
