Sound Substitution Word Change Worksheet
This worksheet asks your child to practice sound substitution by changing the first sound of each word to make a new word. Each picture shows a starter word, like dog or cat, and the child changes only the first sound to create a different word.
At kindergarten age, kids sometimes get stuck on writing when they try to “see” letters first, not hear sounds. When five-year-olds stall on letter shapes, quick sound practice helps children notice the difference in sounds before writing.
Use this page for a short turn, about 5 minutes. Pick one row, cover the rest of the page, and point to the first picture. Say the original word, then ask your child to swap the first sound and say the new word. When the new word sounds right, have the child write the updated word on the line.
The worksheet is useful because it focuses on one clear move, changing only the first sound, with lots of chances to succeed. This makes the practice feel different from a generic alphabet sheet and easy to repeat for parent-child word games.
