Word Order Sentence Building Worksheet for 1st Grade

This sentence building worksheet gives children five rows of mixed-up words, each with a picture cue and a writing line. Arrange the supplied words into a complete sentence, say it aloud, and write it on the line. Read unfamiliar words together before asking for an independent answer. The picture identifies an object mentioned in the sentence; the words provide the action and the rest of its meaning.

The first intended sentence is “The lion sleeps in the shade.” The next is “My mom reads a book.” Look for the starting capital and consider which words belong together. Try an order aloud before writing, using every supplied word once. A picture does not have to show the entire action described, so use all the words to work out the statement. Check that the sentence expresses a complete thought rather than a list of labels.

For hands-on support, write one row’s words on separate paper slips and let your child move them. Point through the spoken sentence from left to right, then copy it with spaces between words and an ending period. Keep the pronoun I capitalized wherever it appears. Read the finished sentence aloud and compare it with the original word list to catch an omitted, repeated, or misplaced word before moving to another row.

Explore the Spelling and Word Building set for related written-word tasks. The Early Words set offers additional supported reading practice. Complete a few rows when careful writing takes time. As a separate follow-up, say a different sentence about one of the same pictures and discuss which words changed. Return to the printed word list when checking the worksheet answer.
