Learning Outcomes

First grader → Subtract feet measurements → Finds the difference between two given quantities and records the answer with ft.

Measurement models → Connect pictures to equations → Uses the illustrated quantities to support subtraction without treating pictures as real measuring tools.

Unit labels → Read and write ft → Keeps the measurement unit attached to the answer instead of writing a number alone.

Feet Subtraction Measurement Worksheet

Measurement subtraction can feel fussy at first because kids have to handle the number and the unit at the same time. On this page, your first grader solves four subtraction problems written in ft. The pictures beside the problems model the saved quantities, but they are not life-size measuring tools, so the job is to read the problem, subtract, and write the answer with the feet label.

This is a good fit when a child can count back, take away within the numbers shown on the page, and recognize that ft stands for feet. Sit nearby for the first problem and ask, “What are we subtracting?” and “What unit goes with the answer?” If the unit label gets skipped, point to it before correcting the math. That keeps the focus on measurement subtraction, not just plain number facts.

The practice works best slowly. Have your child read each subtraction sentence aloud, cover the pictures if they become distracting, then uncover them to check that the model makes sense. If comparing foot measurements is still new, try this related feet measurement comparison worksheet first because it keeps the attention on longer and shorter measurements before subtraction is added.

After the four problems are finished, choose one answer and make a quick real-world sentence together, such as a board, ribbon, or path being some number of feet shorter. For another screen-free next step with measurement math, the pint addition measurement worksheet gives practice with adding quantities in a different unit, which helps children notice that the unit label matters in every measurement problem.
