Find the Missing Numbers Worksheet

Six-year-olds often know the counting song, then pause when a blank shows up inside the line. This page asks first graders to fill missing numbers in short counting runs from 4 to 8, 16 to 20, 14 to 18, and 7 to 11. It also includes four simple number sentences with one missing part, using addition and subtraction within numbers shown on the page.

This is a good fit when a child can count forward to 20, read most numerals to 20, and write answers in small spaces. If 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20 still feel wobbly, that is normal. Sit close, point to each number spot, and let them say the sequence out loud before writing. The main practice is counting order, with a smaller bit of missing-part thinking in the equations.

For the sequence boxes, have your child read the numbers that are already printed, tap each empty space, and count forward one step at a time. For the equations, talk through the relationship in plain words, like “What number with 11 makes 14?” or “17 minus 16 leaves what?” If they guess, bring them back to the nearby numbers on the page and ask them to count or compare instead of starting over.

When the page is done, ask them to read each completed row back to you. That quick check helps catch skipped numbers without making it feel like a test. For more practice with what comes next, use the next number to twenty worksheet because it keeps the focus on counting forward. If writing and recognizing numerals need a lighter step, the selected numbers to twenty cards make it easy to point, read, sort, and say numbers before returning to blanks.
