Next Number to Ten Worksheet

Some six-year-olds can count to 10 out loud, but still stall when the question starts at 4, 6, or 8. This kindergarten math page focuses on one clear job: look at a number, count forward one step, and choose the next whole number. The answers stay at 10 or below, so the practice feels familiar while still asking for careful thinking.

This is a good fit when a child can count aloud to 10 and is beginning to connect spoken number words with written numerals. Sit together and have them say the starting number first, then whisper or tap the next count. If they guess, point back to the number and count forward once together. Keep it light, because five or ten calm minutes can be plenty.

The practice builds number order in a very direct way. Instead of starting at one every time, kids learn to continue the count from a given number. That helps with everyday math language like before, after, next, and one more. If they need more hands-on place value later, tens and ones number cards can help them see how numbers are grouped, while the tens and ones build worksheet gives a next step for building numbers after single-digit order feels steady.

As you work, ask short questions instead of giving long explanations. Try, “What number do you see?” and “What comes right after it?” If an answer is off, count the small sequence together, then let them choose again. A nice next step is to use household items, such as blocks or crackers, and ask, “We have seven. If we add one, what number comes next?”
