Number Comparison Worksheet for First Grade

Kids can count out loud and still stall when they have to choose which number is larger. On this page, a first grader compares two numbers at a time and decides whether one is greater, one is smaller, or the two are equal. The focus is clear and narrow, so the page works well for a short pencil-and-paper math moment together.

This practice fits best when a six-year-old can read or recognize the numbers on the page and has some sense that numbers stand for amounts. If the choices feel close, slow it down. Ask, “Which number would we say later when counting?” When the same number appears on both sides, name that relationship as equal.

The useful work here is in the compare-and-decide step. Children look at both numbers, think about their value, and choose the relationship between them. That comparison language can also make later addition and subtraction talk easier, because children are already practicing words like greater, smaller, and equal before they calculate.

Sit nearby for the first few problems and have your child explain one choice in plain words. If guessing starts, point back to the two numbers and compare them again instead of rushing to correct the answer. For more practice with the same idea, try this number comparison worksheet for first grade, then use the greater, smaller, and equal number worksheet to repeat the relationship words in another layout.
