Learning Outcomes

Classify eight familiar pictures using the two printed groups, Sweet Treats and Savory Foods, with adult support for unfamiliar vocabulary.

Connect each picture to one destination box, tracking completed choices while keeping the category rule consistent.

Explain a grouping decision and suggest another familiar example that would fit one of the two categories.

Sort Sweet Treats and Savory Foods

This picture sorting worksheet presents eight mixed illustrations and two destination boxes labeled Sweet Treats and Savory Foods. Draw a line from each picture to the box where it belongs. Read both labels aloud before starting, then find one example of each group together so the child knows the rule the page is asking them to use.

The sweet treats are a gingerbread cookie, gelatin dessert, lollipop, and chocolate bar. The savory foods are soup, pizza, roast chicken, and noodles. Name the illustrated foods together and explain sweet and savory through familiar examples before sorting. There are four pictures for each box. Check the meaning of an unfamiliar picture before expecting a decision, allowing the child to point and explain the choice in everyday words.

Begin with a spoken choice, then trace the route to the destination box with a finger before drawing its line. Continue one picture at a time, checking that each image has one connection. An adult can help distinguish overlapping lines without making the category choice for the child. When all eight are placed, look at each box and name the common feature of its pictures.

Choose another grouping activity from the Picture Sorting and Logic Pack. The Shapes and Geometry Pack offers sorting by outline features. For a separate follow-up, name one additional item for each of today’s groups and explain why it fits. Keep the same two labels while practicing, then introduce a different sorting rule on another occasion.
