Learning Outcomes

Follow the contours of the hexagon, four-point star, and L-shaped outline, noticing how the pencil changes direction.

Place smaller repeated outlines within the writing rows, returning to the large models for guidance on shape and scale.

Compare a traced or independently drawn outline with its model and identify a section to practice again with support.

A visible outline gives children a place to begin when guiding a pencil still takes concentration. This shape tracing worksheet uses three models: hexagon, four-point star and L-shaped outline. Trace the large outlines first, then practice with the smaller examples and writing lines below. The activity fits a short pre-writing session or supported shape practice when the child is ready to follow a path with a finger or pencil.

Begin with the hexagon and look together at where its outline goes. Follow one section slowly, pause at a turn, and notice the next direction before continuing. The page gives opportunities to attend to straight segments and changes of direction at corners. Compare a smaller attempt with the large model, using the row guides to keep the outline in place. The child can return to a model whenever the path becomes unclear.

Introduce the four-point star and L-shaped outline as separate choices rather than requiring every row at once. Ask the child to point out one feature that looks different between two models. Formal shape vocabulary can accompany the activity, but ordinary words such as corner, curve, and straight line are useful starting points. An adult can demonstrate one difficult section on larger paper and let the child try that movement again.

For more pencil paths, explore the Pre-Writing Warm-Ups set. The Shapes and Geometry Pack offers related recognition, position, and property activities. Use this page at a writing center or during a short practice session at home. Later, invite the child to draw one familiar outline without tracing, then compare it with the model. Pause before repeated attempts become uncomfortable and return to the remaining space another day.
