Learning Outcomes

Group shape pictures by the printed rule, checking visible features instead of relying on color or position.

Connect each shape to one labeled destination box, following the worksheet's line-drawing instruction with adult reading support.

Explain a sorting choice by pointing to a shared shape feature and checking that feature against another picture.

Sort Shapes by Straight and Curved Edges

This shape sorting worksheet presents eight pictures and two destination boxes labeled Straight Edges Only and Has a Curved Edge. Children draw a line from each picture to the box that matches its group. The selection uses geometric outlines, so the sorting decisions focus on visible shape features rather than seasonal objects or unrelated vocabulary.

Follow the whole outline: a shape belongs in the curved-edge group if any part of its boundary is curved. Read the two labels aloud and model one choice. Follow an edge with a finger if a child needs help noticing its direction, then trace a possible connecting line before using a pencil. Check the features of the whole outline instead of choosing by its color, size, or position on the page.

Ask your child to explain a choice before moving to the next picture. A simple phrase or a pointed-out feature is enough; writing an explanation is not part of the printed task. If two pictures look different but fit the same box, compare the feature they share. Go back through the completed lines together to make sure each picture reaches one destination.

The Shapes and Geometry Pack offers further recognition, tracing, and position activities. For other grouping rules, explore the Picture Sorting and Logic Pack. As a separate follow-up, draw one simple outline together and decide which of these two boxes it would fit, explaining the feature that supports the choice.
