Tens and Ones Build Worksheet

Kids can count to 20 and still stall when a number has to be taken apart. On this printable, children work with three numbers, 19, 13, and 16. Each item shows a clear model for the number and gives writing space so they can record the tens and ones.

This page fits well when a first grader can count objects to at least 20 and is starting to see teen numbers as one group of ten plus extra ones. If the numerals themselves still feel shaky, try the selected numbers to twenty cards first so the child can review numbers up to 20 before sorting them into place-value parts.

Sit together and take one number at a time. Ask, “How many tens do you see?” then, “How many ones are left?” For 19, the child records 1 ten and 9 ones. Then do the same for 13 and 16. Saying the number aloud after writing helps connect the model, the numeral, and the place-value idea.

Keep the pace short and calm, especially if writing slows things down. If an answer is off, point back to the model and count the ten first, then the ones. After this page feels comfortable, the number words to numerals worksheet is a useful next step because it connects written number names with the digits children are already reading here.
