Tens and Ones Number Cards Worksheet

Kids often stall on place value because a two-digit number looks like one symbol, not parts. On this printable page, they work with four number cards, 16, 17, 11, and 20, using the printed models and writing fields to show how many tens and ones are in each number.

This is a good fit when a first grader can count objects up to 20 and recognize teen numbers, but still needs practice explaining what the digits mean. Keep it short. Four cards are enough for careful talk without turning the page into a long drill.

Sit together and read one number card at a time. Ask, "How many tens? How many ones?" Then have your child write the matching amounts in the fields. For 20, point out that 2 tens and 0 ones still makes sense, even though the ones place has nothing to count.

When the page is done, ask your child to choose one card and explain it back to you in a full sentence, like "16 is 1 ten and 6 ones." For more number order practice, try the missing numbers worksheet next, since it helps place these values in a counting sequence. If reading number words is the next sticking point, the number words to numerals worksheet gives practice connecting written words to numerals.
