Tens and Ones Build Worksheet

Six-year-olds often understand counting before tens and ones feel natural. This printable gives them three friendly numbers, 17, 12, and 20, with clear models and writing fields so you can sit together and name how many tens and how many ones are in each number.

It works best when a child can count to 20 and is starting to notice that two-digit numbers have parts. If the place value words still feel new, point to the tens first and then the ones, saying, “17 is 1 ten and 7 ones.” Keep the pace slow and let the writing fields guide the answer.

As your child works, ask them to read each number, build or point to the tens and ones shown, and write the matching parts. The set includes 20, which is useful because it shows that a number can have 2 tens and 0 ones. That zero is often where kids pause, so talk it through instead of rushing past it.

After this page, a good next step is a little more practice with the same idea in a fresh layout. Try the Tens and Ones Number Cards Worksheet for more number card work, or use this related tens and ones number cards page to revisit place value another day without making the practice feel too long.
