This is a good fit when a first grader can recognize numbers to 20 and is ready to talk about place value in a simple way. The work is focused and short. They read the number on each card, look at the model, and write how many tens and how many ones belong with it.
Sit nearby for the first card and say the thinking out loud: “17 has one ten and seven ones.” Then let them try the next card while you point to the tens place and ones place. If they reverse the parts, keep it calm and concrete. Ask, “Which digit tells us the tens? Which digit tells us the ones?”
